New Location! 2019-Rafter R Ranch Percherons is now in South Central Kentucky, Jamestown KY near Lake Cumberland. More Updates to Come!
Jess Rieks moved to New York in the 90s with his stock trailer loaded with roping horses, a team of oxen, tools and tack when he left his job as a rancher in Florida. Two short years later, the Rieks family purchased and renovated a non-working dairy farm in the scenic area near Owasco Lake, located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region of New York.
The journey into what we have become came through hard work, as Jess redesigned the dairy barn for draft horse stalls and tack. In 2012 another barn was built that can now house a larger herd. The new barn houses several of our Percheron horses in standing box stalls and maternity stalls.
As our family grew, the love of horses rubbed off onto our daughter, Lily, who started walking and riding in the same stride. When she's home from college, she is actively involved in training and is a member of the IHSA Equestrian team at Alfred University. Our son, Jacob, now enlisted in the Army, enjoys helping out with all machinery and doing hay. He has been on a tractor since a toddler. Farm mom, Tracy, enjoys her activities around the horses and has a small beef cattle herd.
Today, we have transitioned into a family that breeds and trains Percheron horses. All of the current Percherons on site have top pedigrees from the USA and Canada. We are always on the lookout to add to the breeding lines.
The Rieks family at Rafter R Ranch breed for working, hitch and riding horses and are actively involved in the New York State Draft Horse Club.
Spring is always a favorite time of year around the Ranch as the Percheron foals arrive.
